"Weird Al" Yankovic, kreatives Multitalent und Musikliebhabern vor allem wegen großartiger Parodien zeitgenössicher Popmusik bekannt (#1, #2, #3, #4), hat Mitte der Achtziger im Song Christmas at Ground Zero ein Stück Zeitgeschichte verewigt.Wir schreiben das Jahr 1986 und die Welt befindet sich im Kalten Krieg. Das atomare Wettrüsten zwischen den USA und der Sowjetunion birgt die ständige Gefahr der Selbstauslöschung der Menschheit. An diese Ausgangssituation knüpft "Weird Al" an und besingt ein Weihnachtsfest, an dem der Atomkrieg bereits ausgebrochen ist und die Menscheit vor dem Ende steht.
Bissig und mit viel schwarzem Humor analysiert Yankovic Marotten der Gesellschaft (Everywhere the atom bombs are dropping / It's the end of all humanity / No more time for last-minute shopping / It's time to face your final destiny) oder zeichnet spöttisch ein Bild der nuklearen Auswirkungen (It's christmas at ground zero / And if the radiation level's okay / I'll go out with you and see all the new / Mutations on New Year's Day). Dazu bimmeln fröhlich Weihnachtsglocken und Saxophone tröten festliche Klänge, untermalt durch das Surren fallender Bomben .
Das Video ist ein Stückwerk aus Nachrichtenbildern, Fernsehausschnitten, einer Ansprache von Ronald Reagan und einem gasmaskentragenden Kinderchor. Ein absolutes Meisterstück, zu dem man vor allem die Lyrics lesen sollte.
Der Titel des Liedes parodiert übrigens den Fishbone-Song Party at Ground Zero, wobei Ground Zero den Explosionsort (atomarer) Waffen bezeichnet und nicht die heutige Assoziation mit dem World Trade Center meint. Das nur am Rande...;)
